5 Creative Family Photography Ideas

Updated: May 6, 2023

Want to capture your family's personality in your next photo shoot? These five creative family photography ideas will help you do just that.

Choose A Unique Location

Instead of opting for the typical park or studio setting, choose a location that has special meaning to your family. This could be your favorite beach, a local landmark, or even your own backyard. Not only will this make for a more interesting backdrop, but it will also add a personal touch to your photos. Just make sure to get any necessary permits or permissions beforehand.

Incorporate Props or Activities

If you weren't born a natural in front of the camera and posing doesn't come naturally then do not worry!

Adding props or activities to your family photo shoot can help bring out your family's personality and create a fun and memorable experience. Consider bringing along items like balloons, bubbles, or even a picnic basket for a cozy family picnic scene. You could also incorporate activities like playing catch, flying kites, or even baking together for a more candid and natural feel to your photos. Get creative and have fun with it!

Use Different Angles and Perspectives

Be a boss with your photography's composition; don't be afraid to get creative with your family photography by experimenting with different angles and perspectives. Try shooting from above or below, or even from behind an object to add depth and interest to your photos. You can also play with the distance between family members, having some closer to the camera and others further away, to create a unique composition. These techniques will add variety to your family photos and make them stand out from the typical posed shots.

Coordinate Outfits (Without Being Too Matchy-Matchy)

Coordinating outfits for a family photo shoot can be tricky, but it doesn't have to mean everyone wearing the exact same thing. Instead, choose a color scheme or theme and have each family member incorporate it into their outfit in their own unique way. For example, if you choose a beach theme, one family member could wear a blue and white striped shirt, while another wears a flowy white dress. This allows each person to express their individual style while still looking cohesive in the final photos.

Don't Forget Your Furry Family Members

This is a simple one which I feel is so simple I don't even need to mention. But just incase you needed reminding, don't forget to bring your pets along for the family photos!

If you know me, you know that my pets are a huge part of my family. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this way. Therefore, you cannot forget to incorporate them into your family photoshoot!

The Most Simple of The Family Photography Ideas:

Capture Candid Moments

While posed family photos are great, candid shots can often capture the true personality and dynamic of your family. Encourage your photographer to snap photos of your family interacting naturally, whether it's playing a game, telling jokes, or just hanging out. These photos will be cherished for years to come and will bring back memories of the fun and laughter you shared during your photo shoot.
